About the Artwork

My work blends photography, light, and physical materials to explore the intersection of natural and constructed environments. Using digitally manipulated images printed on carefully chosen paper, I create shifting visual experiences that evoke a connection to nature and the beauty of everyday life. Inspired by Tadao Ando’s architectural precision and James Turrell’s atmospheric installations, my pieces invite viewers into immersive, transformative spaces where structure and luminosity merge, revealing new perspectives on ever-changing landscapes.

About the Artist

Yoshiko Gunning is a multidisciplinary artist who has lived and worked in Australia since 1990. Originally from Japan, her practice spans works on paper, sculpture, and immersive installations that explore the relationship between natural forms and the built environment. Influenced by the architecture of Tadao Ando and the light works of James Turrell, she uses layered materials, translucency, and light to create contemplative spatial experiences. Yoshiko has been a finalist in a number of award exhibitions, receiving first prize at the Town of Vincent Art Award in 2004. She has exhibited in solo shows and been included in numerous group exhibitions, including the Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award in 2023 and the Lines in the Sand: Women From the West at Lawrence Willson Art Gallery in 2025.
