About the Artwork

The Long View was created through assembling CT scans I conducted of common garden rocks. I then processed the scans using medical imaging software and transfigured them into landforms. They are reminiscent of 18th century French cartographer Beautemps-Beaupre’s illustrations of Van Diemen’s Land, coastal landforms viewed from the sea, and the icebergs of Antarctica. The Long View makes connections between historical artefacts, science, and art. Using a diagnostic tool for the human body to create landscapes highlights how inextricably bound we are to the survival of the natural world, and the need to think beyond the here and now.
