About the Artwork

Cleft Island, Wilson’s Promontory Cleft Island or Skull Rock is a strange looking island five kilometres south of Wilson’s Promontory. From the mainland, it looks like a human skull but when you get close it reveals itself as a monumental dome of granite with a vast interior void. I am drawn to landscapes with immense features, places where I experience an overwhelming sense of scale and time. Millions of years of geological and climatic forces can be seen in the shape of these landscapes. My paintings are an attempt to describe my encounters with this deeper sense of time.
