About the Artwork

Returning from overseas, I was struck by the resemblance of aerial views of central Australian to the softly weathered plaster of old European buildings. Even the cracks from shifting brickwork and blocked openings echoed the straight lines and random right angles of settler land distribution. In the Australian context, however, they are not just poignant reminders of small lives and passing generations, instead they are earthworks visible from the air. Slicing through the landscape, boundary fences and minor roads supplant natural landforms as defining features of the continent.
