About the Artwork
I read Dave Witty’s book What the Trees See following a research trip to the Eastern Wimmera of Victoria. The journey involved camping adjacent to the dry Richardson River bed with several other artists. The Witty thesis of Australia’s history framed by the continent’s special tree species or more specifically ‘observed’ by those sylvan organism’s encourages an anthropomorphic reading of nature. My time on the Richardson drawing onto copper plates and painting on canvas images of particular trees gave me a sense of ‘their’ great age, their complicated beauty and more specifically a type of personality.
