About the Artwork
Space Invaders and Morris Willows explores the introduction of invasive species to Tasmania, primarily for their aesthetic allure. These species, including Willows, poisonous Oleander, Blue Periwinkle, and Ragwort, along with some birds and insects, have caused significant ecological damage. Their introduction coincided with the decorative prominence of the era of Victorian wallpapers. However, these species although beautiful are detrimental to our native species and ecology. This work prompts us to reflect on the balance between aesthetics and the preservation of our delicate ecosystem. It poses the question: are our native ecology and species more inherently beautiful than the ‘invaders’?
