About the Artwork

In this painting, three views of Freycinet are carried on forms that are a copy of sculptural/painting hybrids I have made recently. I began presenting landscape in this way from the late ‘90s as a way of highlighting the precious, fragile natural environment, under threat from development and the effects of climate change. By employing museum-like forms (taken from the Great Exhibition, 1851), and adopting the jewel-like miniatures, I was wanting to present landscape in a way that avoided the heroic, and provoked a curiosity and an engagement with contemporary realities.

About the Artist

David Keeling's work has always been concerned with place. For decades he has engaged with the nature -culture debate, giving form to the political- environmental realities of the day. Much of his work is concerned with the way we perceive nature, and how we picture a landscape that is so closely observed, measured, mapped, plotted, photographed and commodified.
