About the Artwork

This artwork portrays Charles’ mother’s country, Papunya. He lived there for some time with family, travelling the Hermannsburg road between the communities Hermannsburg (Ntaria) and Papunya. Charles Jangala Inkamala is an Arrernte artist from Ntaria (Hermannsburg). He paints significant cultural sites such as Mt Sonder and Glen Helen Gorge in stylised detail. Charles meditates on his home country as he paints and imbues his work with strong knowledge of, and connection to, land. His intricate line work captures the multitude of directions of the rock layers in the land and conjures strong impressions of the shaping of this country.

About the Artist

Charles Jangala Inkamala is an Arrernte artist from the Central Desert. He was born in Ntaria (Hermannsburg), his father's country. Charles meditates on his home country as he paints significant cultural sites such as Mt Sonder and Glen Helen Gorge and his mother's country Papunya. The stylized and bold paintings communicate his strong knowledge of and connection to country. He now lives in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and has been painting with Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists since 2017.
